Waste collection crews from Aylesbury Vale and South Northamptonshire are featured in a new DVD aimed at improving health and safety standards in the waste industry.

The DVD is a joint production between AVDC and South Northamptonshire Council and is called Supervising and Monitoring in Refuse and Recycling. It has been designed to be used during the training of waste supervisors, team leaders and client monitoring officers in both the public and private sector.

Topics such as legislation, responsibilities, hazards and risks, supervision and monitoring and dealing with accidents are all featured in the DVD.

It follows the successful Working Safely in Refuse and Recycling DVD which was released by the councils last year. The DVD caused quite a stir in the waste industry and a number of local authorities bought the training package to help train their staff.

According to a report published by the Health and Safety Executive, incident rates in waste and refuse businesses are higher than the construction industry. Research shows that the number of fatal incidents are over ten times the national average and accident rates are over four times the average in this line of work.

Councillor Sir Beville Stanier, Cabinet Member for Environment and Health at AVDC, said: “Health and safety in the workplace is vitally important to us. This DVD demonstrates our commitment to the achievement of high levels of performance in this crucial area. I am sure that this DVD will be as successful as the previous training package.”

Councillor Mike Hill, Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste Management at South Northamptonshire Council, said: “The safety of our employees is vitally important. This DVD provides us with the skills needed to undertake a higher level of supervision for our crews to ensure that they carry out their work in accordance with the highest principles of health and safety legislation. It will in effect act as a tool to keep our people safe as they carry out their duties whilst at work.”

Chantal Nicholls, HM Principal Inspector of Health and Safety, HSE Manufacturing Sector (Waste and Recycling), said: “This DVD provides an excellent insight into the critical role that supervision and monitoring plays in ensuring that safe systems of work are adhered to. It contains useful case studies and shows the importance of feedback being given by supervisors to crews. It is well worth watching and acting upon.”

Priced at £249, copies of the new DVD can be bought from No Going Back Productions. Please call 01858 410278.
