Help look after Aylesbury Vale's countryside
Residents who want to play a part in looking after the wildlife and countryside of Aylesbury Vale are being urged to join the Vale Countryside Volunteers.
The group, supported by Aylesbury Vale District Council and BTCV (formerly British Trust for Conservation Volunteers), meet most Wednesdays to carry out a range of conservation work across the district and a new autumn programme of volunteer events has just started. No experience is necessary as training on all activities is provided by experienced professionals.
Recent work carried out by volunteers includes constructing an otter holt at Mill Farm in Beachampton, clearing out the village pond in North Marston and a path clearance and litter pick at the Sandpit in Buckingham.
People volunteer for many different reasons. They may have retired or are looking to get back into work and want to learn some practical skills. Whatever the reason, everyone is welcome.
Upcoming projects include:
• Removal of rhododendron at Akeley Wood on 21 October
• Restoration of Chearsley village pond on 28 October
• Willow coppicing at Denby Walk in Aylesbury on 4 November
• Conservation works at Calvert nature reserve on 11 November
The volunteer group meets at Haydon Mill, Rabans Lane, Aylesbury, at 9.15am and Duck Court Farm, opposite Morrisons in Aylesbury at 9.30am. Volunteers are asked to wear suitable clothing, strong footwear and bring a packed lunch.
Councillor David Thompson, Cabinet Member for Leisure at AVDC, said: “The volunteering programme is a fun and worthwhile way of giving something back to the environment and helps contribute to maintaining the biodiversity of our local area. It also provides people with the opportunity of meeting like-minded people, keeping fit, learning new skills and enjoying their local environment.”
