Register your right to vote

Aylesbury Vale District Council has started signing up voters to the electoral register in readiness for the forthcoming General Election, which can be called anytime between now and June 2010.

More than 71,000 voter registration forms have been posted to households across the district, asking residents to confirm their details so that the electoral register is up-to-date and everyone who is entitled to vote can do so.

Residents can confirm their details by using the council’s telephone, text messaging or online facilities, making it even easier to register. So far, more than 31,000 households have registered to vote, with 16,000 registering electronically.

Councillor John Cartwright, Leader of the Council, said: “It is very important that, over the next few weeks, Aylesbury Vale residents use one of the methods available to register their right to vote. Electoral registration is a legal requirement and anyone not responding to this request could face prosecution and a significant fine.

“If your details haven’t changed, registering by freephone, online or text only takes a few minutes and reduces postage costs. You can also help save money and the environment by registering straight away – sending out reminders to households who have not registered is expensive and, in most cases, unnecessary.”

The automated telephone registration service is free to use (mobile networks may make a charge) by calling 0800 197 6185 or you can log onto to register. Texts to 80212 will be charged at the service providers’ standard rate.

If any detail has changed, for example the names or number of people living in your property, then the voter registration form will need to be returned to the district council in the post.
