Dodgeball, one of the country’s newest sports, is being brought to Aylesbury College this month.
Children aged nine to 13 will have the opportunity to learn and develop their skills in this fast-paced game.
Sessions run by qualified coaches will commence Saturday 26 September at the college from 12.30pm to 1.30pm and will cost just £2 to attend (£1 for Passport to Leisure card holders).
Conceived in the USA, the sport was popularised with the 2004 release of the smash hit film Dodgeball: The True Underdog Story, and became an officially recognised sport in the UK in 2005. It is a fun and an increasingly popular activity that helps develop key skills including agility, co-ordination and decision making.
There are many variations of the game, each involving players trying to avoid being hit by a ball thrown by opponents. Players are out when struck by an opponent by a direct throw or if an opponent catches their throw cleanly.
Each game ends when all players on one team are out or when time expires, with, in the latter case, the team with most players left being the winners.
The sessions, which are taking place every Saturday, have been organised by Aylesbury Vale District Council in partnership with Aylesbury College, the Healthy Living Centre and Milton Keynes Dodgeball Club.
Councillor David Thompson, Cabinet Member for Leisure at AVDC, said: “Dodgeball has a broad appeal as it can be played by anyone. Like many court games, it’s good for fitness and agility too. We hope to see youngsters seizing this chance to team up and get active together.”
