Pay and display charges apply from 23 August
New parking arrangements are set to be introduced in Buckingham from Monday 23 August.
Car parks at Cornwalls Meadow and Western Avenue will become pay-and-display parking, in line with similar arrangements already in place at other district council-owned car parks across Aylesbury Vale.
Drivers will still be able to park for free at the Cornwalls Meadow car park for the first hour. The pay and display charges in this car park will be 30p for a two-hour stay, 50p for three hours, £1 for four hours, and £1.50 for five hours.
Nearly 60 per cent of the long stay bays will be converted to short stay parking to address concerns expressed by retailers. Shopmobility and disabled bays will remain unchanged.
Parking at the Western Avenue long-stay car park will be a flat rate charge of £2.50 per day.
The charges in both car parks, which are fixed until March 2012, will only apply between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, allowing visitors to park for free in the evenings, on Sundays and on public holidays.
A new 40-space, long-stay car park at Stratford Fields is due to open shortly. It is part of a package of parking improvements for Buckingham being funded by AVDC.
Consultation about improving the provision of parking in Buckingham has taken place with the town council and the local traders association, who both support the need for increasing the number of parking spaces in the town. Local traders are also very keen that Cornwalls Meadow car park is increasingly geared towards short-stay visitors.
Councillor Kevin McPartland, Cabinet Member for Civic Amenities, said: “People park in Buckingham for many reasons – from those popping into the town centre shops to workers who want to leave their cars in the town all day. We are aware that many local traders have been concerned about the lack of short-stay spaces at Cornwalls Meadow in particular, so the time is right to make appropriate changes to the levels of parking on offer.
“We believe that developing a new long-stay car park at Stratford Fields, with the assistance of Buckingham Athletic Football Club, and increasing the provision of short-stay spaces at Cornwalls Meadow, are positive steps towards improving the parking facilities in Buckingham.
“The modest charges in the Buckingham car parks are in line with the proposals we have set out for other car parks in the district. Most importantly, they still retain some free time and will be fixed at those levels for nearly two years.”
