The Axis sculpture in Vale Park
A new interactive map showing the location of public art in Aylesbury Vale is now available online.
The virtual art trail, created by Aylesbury Vale District Council, will allow residents to view information about each piece at the touch of a button.
The Axis sculpture in Vale Park, the enamel panelling outside Aylesbury’s bus station, the Swan Girl outside the Old Gaol Museum and the Golden Swan on top of the old town hall in Buckingham are among the pieces to feature on the map.
The online map is part of AVDC’s public art strategy for the Vale. The council aims to make sure that public art is encouraged and that local residents and artists are involved whenever possible.
Public art can take the form of sculpture, commissioned art, landscape features, temporary performances, or specially designed street furniture and lighting.
Aylesbury Vale District Council’s cabinet member for leisure, Councillor David Thompson, says many people may be unaware of the historical gems that surround them. “We pass public art every day without giving a thought about who created them or how old the pieces might be.”
He added. “The public art map will help local people as well as visitors to understand the history and cultural significance of the pieces. I look forward to following the virtual trail to discover more about the fascinating public art in the Vale.”

The public art map is a work in progress and not every piece of art has been included. If residents have any suggestions about what should be included they can email arts@aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk with the information.
