Work starts on new long stay parking for Buckingham

Archived press release

Date Published: 14/07/10

Work to bring a new long stay car park to Buckingham has started this week.

The flat-surface car park – which is being provided by Aylesbury Vale District Council working in association with Buckingham Athletic Football Club – will provide an additional 40 long stay spaces at Stratford Fields.

It’s expected that the new spaces will be available for use by the end of August. The proposed charge for public parking is a daily rate of £2.50.

Public parking will be available from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and between 8am and 12.30pm on Saturdays. The car park will be for the use of Buckingham Athletic Football Club members outside of these hours.

The new car park is part of a £300,000 package of parking improvements planned for Buckingham. AVDC intends to create more short stay spaces at Cornwalls Meadow, to try and encourage more shoppers in to the town, and improve the appearance of the car park by providing new signage, lighting and planting.

Consultation about improving the provision of parking in Buckingham has taken place with the local traders association and the town council, who both support the need for increasing the number of parking spaces in the town. Local traders are also very keen that Cornwalls Meadow car park is increasingly geared towards short-stay visitors.

Councillor Kevin McPartland, Cabinet Member for Civic Amenities, said: “The extra spaces that the new long stay car park provides will enable more short stay spaces to be introduced in the town centre for the benefit of shoppers, visitors and the local community. We want to encourage people

to come and visit and shop in Buckingham. By making more short stay spaces available for visitors and shoppers, whilst still providing those who trade or work in the town with a place to park, we can support the local economy and ensure it continues to grow.”
