A woman from Marsworth has been jailed for failing to pay nearly £3,000 in council tax to Aylesbury Vale District Council.
Suzanne Glover was sentenced to 17 days imprisonment after Aylesbury Magistrates’ Court found her guilty of council tax evasion.
The court heard that Glover, of Lower Icknield Way, owed £2,753.20 in unpaid council tax between 2005 and 2007.
The council had given Glover the opportunity to repay the debt at a rate of £10 a week. However, no payments had been made since December 2008 and the council therefore decided to go ahead with committal proceedings.
Councillor Neil Blake, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “The council has a duty to collect all the taxes owed to it. If people don’t pay, the shortfall has to be met by everyone else and the council will pursue non-payers and prosecute where necessary. However, every effort will be made to help people who are in real financial difficulties.”
