National Family Week comes to Aylesbury

Archived press release

Date Published: 19/05/10

Children and their parents and carers can enjoy a great array of fun activities in next month’s half- term holiday as part of National Family Week.

The nationwide initiative is being run up and down the country and is designed to celebrate family life.

AVDC and partners will be supporting this week of fun by organising lots of family-oriented activities and events in Aylesbury.

The week’s events kick off on Tuesday 1 June with a free family fun day in Vale Park between 11am and 2pm (please note this event was cancelled due to wet weather).

On Thursday 3 June, children and their families can enjoy a teddy bears’ picnic and sports day at Walton Court Playing Fields from 11am to 1pm – those attending should bring a packed lunch and a bear.

Another highlight is a free family fun day at Bowlers Field in Meadowcroft on Friday 4 June between 11am and 3pm.

Activities will vary for each event but include sports, crafts, face painting, bouncy castles, music, giant games and competitions.

A National Family Week-themed playscheme for five to 13-year-olds will be held at the Jonathan Page Play Centre in Meadowcroft, which is celebrating its 10th birthday this year. Youngsters will have the chance to try their hand at cooking, make a patchwork quilt, dress up as their parents or grandparents and take part in a ‘guess the baby’ competition.

Councillor David Thompson, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “Families play a fundamental role in today’s society and National Family Week is a great initiative which provides the opportunity to celebrate family life in all its many forms across Aylesbury. I hope everyone taking part has a fantastic time.”

The council’s free SMS text alert service is an easy way of accessing information about the half-term programme. Young people can register for information about the activities taking place while adults can subscribe to receive information about playschemes for their children.

Mobile telephone numbers will be kept secure and only be used for the purpose of the text alerts service. Register at www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/textalerts
