Give it a go in May! That’s the call from TV presenter and local resident, Fern Britton, and Reactivate Bucks, the campaign that connects people to hundreds of sports and activities across the county.
From 17 to 23 May, local people will have their pick of hundreds of different activities ranging from street dance to gentle walks. With many subsidised or free, there’s never been a better time to get off the sofa and get moving as Fern explains: “With so much on offer, everyone can feel the benefits of exercise while having fun.”
Having fun is something Fern takes very seriously. As she prepares to take part in her fifth cycle challenge for the charity Women for Women, one of the things she is looking forward to most is meeting other participants. “I love the cycling, the women, the laughs and the good we are doing.” Similarly for Reactivate Bucks, the emphasis is on offering a fantastic choice of activities so everyone can find something which appeals to them and gives them the chance to meet like minded people. As Fern explains: “If you enjoy something it makes it so much easier. Reactivate Bucks is a great way of helping people get fit, feel healthier and have fun.”
You can also be sure that all activities promoted through Reactivate Bucks are led by qualified coaches providing motivation and a helping hand. With hundreds of activities on offer, there’s something for everyone regardless of age, fitness level or ability. Indoor and outdoor activities are on offer ranging from gentle exercise for those who want to take it easy through to high energy action. Activities across the county range from folk and ballroom dancing to climbing and martial arts, not to mention, hockey, swimming, badminton, cricket, disability sports, street dance, aerobics and gentle walks.
In Aylesbury Vale there are a number of free activities and special offer sessions to choose from during Give it a Go Week. For instance those joining the Beginners’ Jogging Group which meets at Stoke Mandeville Stadium on Wednesday evenings, will enjoy their first three weekly sessions for free. Or for those wanting to push themselves to the limit there’s an opportunity to try for free one of the Transformations Bootcamps which take place Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at Fairford Leys Football Pitches. For those looking for fun and a return to playing Rounders, they can enjoy a free taster session at Bucks CC Football Club on Wednesday evening. There’s also a Nifty Fifties Class at Wendover Memorial Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Whatever people choose to do, giving sport or an activity a go will help them to get fit, feel healthier and have fun. For Alison Ladyman, a busy working mum from Aylesbury Vale, going on a Return to Netball Course recently has provided her with a real boost. “I really enjoy running round and having fun. I might be 46 but I won’t let my body hold me back!”
Says Lee Mason, Director of Bucks Sport, “People in the county don’t realise just how many sport and leisure activities are open to them and how easy it is to get involved. We hope Reactivate Bucks will inspire them to give physical activity a go, or get back into it. We are confident that there is something out there for everyone and we know that once people find something they like, they continue with it and enjoy the many benefits that a more active life can bring.”
