Shopmobility moves to a new home on 6 September

A service that helps people with walking difficulties get around Aylesbury town centre is set to move into a brand new purpose-built facility in the Upper Hundreds car park.

Aylesbury Vale District Council’s Shopmobility service is a vital resource for anyone with mobility issues coming into the town centre and is used by hundreds of people every year.

Councillor Derrick Isham, Vice Chairman of the Council, will officially open the new premises on Monday 6 September.

The service has been providing mobility scooter and wheelchair hire, free of charge, from its current base in the Civic Centre car park since 1997. However, the car park is due to be demolished next year, along with the Civic Centre building and the Reg Maxwell pool.

The Upper Hundreds multi-storey car park was identified as a new location for Shopmobility and the council agreed the funding needed to provide better facilities for staff and users. The new premises offer a more user-friendly waiting room and there are dedicated parking spaces for Shopmobility customers.

Pedestrian access has also been improved at the Britannia Walk entrance to Upper Hundreds car park. Brand new women’s toilets have been built to replace the existing ones and new disabled and refurbished men’s facilities are due to open on 6 September.

Councillor Pam Pearce, Cabinet Member for Community Matters, said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to visit Aylesbury town centre. Shopmobility does a fantastic job in helping people with mobility issues. We have invested in creating a brand new facility to support the needs of this very important service, this can only help shoppers and businesses.”

The current unit in the Civic Centre car park will close at 1pm on Saturday 4 September and the new facility on the ground floor of the Upper Hundreds car park will open on Monday 6 September.

The opening hours for the new Shopmobility office will be Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, and Saturday 9am to 1pm.
