Aylesbury’s Vale Park will be doused in purple when hundreds of beautiful crocus bulbs bloom – after they’re planted as part of a drive to raise funds for polio-affected countries.
The Aylesbury Rotary Club is making an ambitious attempt to plant 1,000 crocus’ in the park and is looking for volunteers to help with the project.
Volunteers wanting to help plant the bulbs should get to Vale Park for 10am on Saturday 2 October.
The aim is for the crocus bulbs to flower during February 2011 in time for the Rotary Thanks for Life Day.
If successful the project could make it into the Guinness Book of Records for the largest number of people planting bulbs in a one hour slot.
The record currently stands at 331 people so in order to beat this the club is trying to attract groups from the community.
All proceeds from the Thanks for Life day will go towards helping eradicate polio from the world.
Every £1 raised in this campaign will pay for five doses of the anti-polio vaccine.
Tony Divers, Aylesbury Hundreds Rotary Club President, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn about dangers facing children in other parts of the world and to help those that are less fortunate than themselves. Many will never have heard of Polio or realize its terrible toll.”
