Celebrate the contribution of the Vale’s over 60s
Aylesbury Vale District Council is working with local groups to mark Older People’s Day with a special event to recognise the important role that people aged 60 and over have in our society.
Please note this event is at Quarrendon & Meadowcroft Community Centre, not at The Oculus as printed in the Bucks Herald.
This is the fourth year the UK has supported International Older People’s Day, which is designed to bring together people of all ages and tackle outdated stereotypes about ageing.
And AVDC is taking this opportunity to celebrate and highlight the contribution of the Vale’s over 60s by holding a showcase of older people’s talent in Aylesbury on 1 October.
From 10am to 3pm there’ll be a range of activities and entertainment at the Quarrendon and Meadowcroft Community Centre including a talent show featuring local older people, a display of arts and crafts and information about clubs and classes in the district.
There will also be the opportunity for older people to act as ‘living books’. They will be given the chance to talk to young people about their interesting lives and experiences.
All residents aged 60 and over are encouraged to come along to the free event. Entry is by ticket only and a free lunch will be provided.
This event was previously scheduled to be held at the Oculus in Gatehouse Road, but will now take place at the Quarrendon and Meadowcroft Community Centre.
Councillor Michael Edmonds, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “This is the first event of its kind in Aylesbury Vale and we’re really looking forward to it. It will help us to recognise the important role older people have in our society. And it gives us an opportunity to tackle negative attitudes and stereotypes by promoting a positive view of later life.”
