Households are being encouraged to sign up and take advantage of Aylesbury Vale District Council’s new optional garden waste service.

Collections will start in April in some areas in the Vale, and will be extended to others later in the year.

Residents living in Wendover, Halton, Aston Clinton, Weston Turville and Stoke Mandeville Village will be the first households in the district to receive the new collections.

Information leaflets and bin hangers explaining the new service are currently being delivered to households in the first phase of the roll-out. There will also be promotional events at Wendover Market on 9 February and at Wyevale Garden Centre on 14 February.

The fortnightly kerbside service is available for £36 a year, and will operate between February and November. It is hoped having the option of this service will be helpful for those without transport or who may struggle to get their garden waste to the household waste and recycling centres.

Residents who opt into the service will be issued with a new 240-litre brown wheeled bin for grass cuttings, twigs and small branches, weeds and hedge trimmings. All the garden waste collected will be recycled into compost.

The brown bin cannot be used to dispose of soil, concrete or stones, fruit and vegetable peelings, food scraps, coal ash, animal waste, household waste, flower pots, trays or plastics.

The new scheme is entirely optional, and residents can still take their garden waste to the local household waste and recycling centres, or compost it at home.

With the introduction of the garden waste service, the council will no longer be collecting garden bags from households from September 2012.

The garden waste service is part of a range of improvements to the council’s waste and recycling service, which will start to be rolled out from September.

Councillor Sir Beville Stanier, Cabinet Member for Environment and Health, said: “Ensuring residents have options on disposing their garden waste is crucial and introducing this service for a small fee allows us to do this. We think this is a fair approach which we hope will be affordable. By signing up, residents can help us reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and combat climate change, as we will be composting all the garden waste we collect.”

To register your interest in the service, visit www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/gardenwaste to fill in the online form or call 01296 585510. Residents can sign up at any time but if they do it before 27 February they will be included on the first collection date in April.
