Olympic torchbearers in Aylesbury
Thousands of people lined the district’s streets to experience the excitement of the Olympic Torch as it travelled through Aylesbury Vale.
From Buckingham, Winslow and Whitchurch and onto Aylesbury, Stoke Mandeville and Waddesdon, delighted crowds of children let out especially from school, young people and adults cheered, waved union flags and applauded as a succession of runners carried the torch on day 52 of its journey to the Olympic Stadium in London.
The event was streamed live to a national audience on the internet as part of the comprehensive coverage of the Torch Relay tour of the UK, and showed off Aylesbury Vale at its best.
Aylesbury Vale District Council thanks everyone who took part in this very special occasion.
Preparations are now underway for the Paralympic Flame Festival and Celebration in Aylesbury Vale.
On 28 August, individuals and organisations from across the world will be at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, birthplace of the Paralympics, to witness the creation of the Paralympic Flame.
At the same time as the ceremony at the stadium, Aylesbury town centre will host a free celebratory event for local people to mark this unique occasion.
The Paralympic Flame celebration, to be held in Market Square and Kingsbury from 2pm onwards, will feature exciting performances that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as well as great street entertainment. There’ll also be a big screen relaying live pictures from the Stoke Mandeville Flame Lighting Ceremony and a spectacular pyrotechnic performance in the evening.
