Keep your home secure this summer

Archived press release

Date Published: 27/06/12

As the weather warms up, the Aylesbury Vale Community Safety Partnership is reminding residents to secure their windows and doors every time they leave their homes.

The Partnership is launching a summer campaign to help prevent an increase in burglaries across the district.

As part of the campaign, Aylesbury Vale District Council’s community safety team has produced a short video to advise residents on how to protect their homes and belongings whilst away on holiday.

The video, called 'Don’t let thieves house sit this summer', highlights the opportunities that may be left open for a burglar to sneak in. It features a burglar gaining entry to a property by several different means including through an unlocked UPVC door or using garden tools to prise open a window.

The summer months also traditionally see a rise in sneak-in burglaries as homeowners leave their front doors unlocked when they are out in the garden or windows open during the night.

The Partnership is urging the public to listen to the advice in the video and reconsider their home security habits. Key messages include:
• Use timer switches to make your home look occupied
• Mark up valuables with a UV pen
• Lock sheds and garages so tools cannot be used to break in
• Not advertising your whereabouts on social networking sites

The video is available to view on the AVDC YouTube channel. Postcards with the link to the video will be distributed to travel agents, coffee shops, libraries and various fetes taking place across the Vale this summer.

Councillor Pam Pearce, Cabinet Member for Community Matters at AVDC, said: “There are simple steps we can all take to help reduce the chances of falling victim to burglary. With so much going on in the Vale over the coming weeks, this timely reminder from our community safety team will be very welcome.”
