The newly refurbished Aqua Vale Swimming and Fitness Centre in Aylesbury has been officially unveiled.

The Chairman of Aylesbury Vale District Council, Councillor Derrick Isham, performed a ribbon cutting ceremony on 9 October to celebrate the successful completion of the £5.8 million refurbishment project.

A retractable roof on the open air pool, two new flumes, an extended fitness gym, a new café overlooking Vale Park, a new and enhanced reception area and extended car parking are all part of the makeover.

The work has been made possible thanks to the funding and commitment of Aylesbury Vale District Council, who own the Park Street centre, along with support from the Aylesbury Vale Community Trust (AVCT) in making the project a success.

The biggest change to the facility, operated by AVCT, has seen the previous outdoor pool now covered by a retractable roof. State-of-the-art electric-powered panels can be opened in sunny weather so swimmers can experience the outdoors.

The fitness suite has been extended and reconfigured with zoned areas, allowing for different abilities and styles of training. The workout studio has also been revamped, enabling customers to workout to the latest in cardio classes including Zumba and body combat.

Changing facilities have been upgraded with new rooms being created and alterations made to the existing changing village.

A new spacious reception area housing the café is now open and the all-new glass interior provides the perfect viewing position while taking a break. The centre also has additional parking spaces.

Councillor David Thompson, AVDC Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “Our investment in leisure facilities reflects are continuing commitment to local people and their communities. The huge success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has inspired the whole nation and that means more people than ever will be looking to get more involved in sport and improving their fitness, health and general well-being. The top range of facilities and programmes on offer at Aqua Vale are impressive and I am sure the people of Aylesbury Vale will benefit from the new look centre and encourage them to keep fit for many years to come.”

A special weekend of free, fun family activities is being planned so local people can enjoy the new revamped facilities and see for themselves the improvements that have been made.

Local Olympic and Paralympic athletes will be making an appearance at the open weekend on 13 and 14 October (10am to 4pm) to support the launch of the new look leisure centre. A host of free activities will be available including swimming, fitness classes and gym trials.

Miles Buckinghamshire, Chairman of the Aylesbury Vale Community Trust, said: “We have been working with Aylesbury Vale District Council for the past 18 months in supporting their investment in the swimming complex and are delighted that the redevelopment of Aqua Vale is now complete. We would urge people to use this opportunity to come and take a look at the improved facilities.”
