Proposal to re-introduce car parking charges to Greyhound Lane Car Park in Winslow

Resolution

In accordance with the Council's Petitions Scheme, the petition organiser, Ruth Ash was given an opportunity to explain the rationale behind the arguments expressed in the petition.  After Mrs Ash had spoken, Members discussed the issues raised by the petition.

Those Members who spoke were of the view overall, that this issue should be examined within the context of the Council's aspirations for maintaining the economic vibrancy of the District's Towns and Parishes.

The Cabinet Member for Civic Amenities would take the views expressed into account when determining future action in response to the petition.

Description:

The paper petition, signed by 2186 Winslow residents, business owners, employees and visitors to Winslow, is opposed to the re-introduction of car parking charges to the Greyhound Lane car park in Winslow.  The reasons for opposition are as follows:

1)  It will be bad for residents.
2)  It will be bad for businesses already struggling in the current economic climate.
3)  It will be a significant financial burden on employees who come to work by car and will struggle to find an additional £500 + per annum to park their cars.
4)  It will discourage visitors from coming to Winslow.

Finally, the previous instance of charging for parking in Greyhound Lane was an unmitigated failure and as a result was withdrawn.  The re-introduction of charges will be a further needless waste of public money.
