Archaeological dig in Aylesbury town centre

A small number of car parking spaces will be lost in Aylesbury town centre while Thames Valley Archaeological Services carry out a dig in the Exchange Street car park.

The dig starts on Tuesday 31 August and is being carried out as a precursor to the proposed supermarket and hotel development on the south side of Exchange Street. it is expected the work will take up to one week, depending on what is found.

Two trenches are to be dug in the car park to see if there are any indications of historic activity on the site which might merit further investigation.

Around 26 spaces will be cordoned off to allow work on the first trench to take place. The second trench will result in the temporary loss of 13 spaces.

Only one trench will be excavated at a time and will be reinstated prior to the next trench being dug.Alternative long-stay car parks are available throughout the town, including Walton Street, Friarscroft and Hampden House. Resident permit holders are reminded that they may use their permits in the Civic Centre car park.

New parking arrangements are set to be introduced in Buckingham from Monday 23 August.

Car parks at Cornwalls Meadow and Western Avenue will become pay-and-display parking, in line with similar arrangements already in place at other district council-owned car parks across Aylesbury Vale.

Drivers will still be able to park for free at the Cornwalls Meadow car park for the first hour. The pay and display charges in this car park will be 30p for a two-hour stay, 50p for three hours, £1 for four hours, and £1.50 for five hours.

Nearly 60 per cent of the long stay bays will be converted to short stay parking to address concerns expressed by retailers. Shopmobility and disabled bays will remain unchanged.
Parking at the Western Avenue long-stay car park will be a flat rate charge of £2.50 per day.

The charges in both car parks, which are fixed until March 2012, will only apply between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, allowing visitors to park for free in the evenings, on Sundays and on public holidays.

A new 40-space, long-stay car park at Stratford Fields is due to open shortly. It is part of a package of parking improvements for Buckingham being funded by AVDC.
