Hackney Carriage Taxi Vehicle Licence

Hackney Carriage vehicles are more commonly known as “Taxis”. In the Vale of Aylesbury we only licence purpose built hackney carriage vehicles and in specific colours (Black in Aylesbury and White for the rural district). In Aylesbury town we limit the number of Hackney Carriage’s to 50. These vehicles sit on the ranks in the town and can be hailed. They are easily identifiable by their typical “London Cab” style, all black or white colouring and an illuminated “TAXI” roof sign.

The vehicles are designed to a very high standard and include full wheelchair accessibility, access and steps, hearing induction loops and well positioned grab handles. All journeys taken in the vehicle will be charged using a meter. The meter rate is set by the council and the tariff fare must be displayed in the vehicle at all times for passengers to see.

Vehicle Licences will only ever run for a maximum of 1 year and the vehicle must pass a mechanical inspection before the licence is issued. Aylesbury vale impose age restrictions on vehicles. The aim is to ensure that the fleet of licensed vehicles is constantly renewed with modern safety aspects and reduced fuel emissions. The average mileage that licensed vehicles do is 3 times more than normal vehicles and so the age limit is also a crude way of maintaining a better standard of vehicle.

Licence Fees:

Annual Vehicle licence fee for vehicles under 6 years of age £331.00
Annual Vehicle licence fee for vehicles over 6 years but under 10 £372.00

Fee for non-attendance of a booked vehicle inspection £75.00
Vehicle retests if failed first test (within 14 days) £28.00
Vehicle retests if failed first test (after 14 days) £41.00

Replacement vehicle plate £25.00
Administration charge for changing details £16.00
