Business properties - Empty

What is unoccupied property rating?

Business rates won’t be payable for the first 3 months that a property is empty. This is extended to 6 months in the case of some industrial properties.

After this period, rates are payable in full unless the unoccupied property rate has been reduced by a government order.

In most cases, the unoccupied property rate is zero for properties owned by charities and community amateur sports clubs. Listed buildings with a business assessment are also exempt from business rates when empty.

A small commercial or industrial property with a rateable value of less than £2,900 is fully exempt from business rates.
