Do I need building control approval

Which building control procedure is best for your circumstances

Do I need building control approval?

Whether you apply for planning permission or not, you may still need to make a building control application. Building control checks that your building work meets minimum safety, accessibility and energy efficiency standards.

Before starting any work, check the exempt works list, read to see if you need a building regulation application or contact us for advice.

We also encourage you to read the building work, replacements and repairs to your home leaflet. Many jobs in the home need to be notified to and approved by us unless they’re carried out by an installer who is registered with a Competent Person Scheme.

What type of building control application should I make?

There are three different building control procedures, full plans, building notice and regularisation of work.

Read more information on each of the procedures along with the application forms and charges.
