Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) has pledged its support for this year’s Great British Spring Clean, run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. The campaign, which runs from Friday 22 March to Tuesday 23 April, will see up to half a million people nationwide taking action to clean up streets, parks and beaches across the country.
In a bid to support the campaign, AVDC is starting early and, from Monday 11 March, is encouraging local community groups, volunteer groups and parishes to get involved by organising local litter picking events. The council is providing a supply of bags to support events, which can be collected from the reception at AVDC’s Gateway Office, as well as arranging for any litter collected as part of an event, to be removed from a central location. For more information on how to get involved, visit the GBSpringClean2019 webpage.
Councillor Paul Irwin, Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure commented:
“Last year we supported 25 volunteer groups, community groups and parishes in their litter picks and this year we’re looking to beat that number. We’re calling upon all Aylesbury Vale parishes, community groups, organisations and volunteers to get involved with this fantastic campaign and help us keep the Vale clean and green.”
As an extra incentive, AVDC is also running a competition alongside the campaign to find Aylesbury Vale’s best #LitterHeroes. Anyone taking part in a local community litter pick event is invited to send their photos to AVDC by email. The best photos will be in the chance of winning a kindly donated voucher to spend at The Works in Aylesbury!
The Great British Spring Clean brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to the environment on their doorstep and in 2018 around 370,000 #LitterHeroes collected more than 630,000 bags of rubbish.
Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: “The Great British Spring Clean is an opportunity for the millions of people who care about the environment on their doorstep to do something positive that will make a visible difference.
“We are delighted that AVDC is supporting this year’s campaign and would like to thank them for their support.
“Without councils across the country giving the campaign their backing, our volunteers would not be able to do the incredible job they do.”
