Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) has successfully secured a Rough Sleeping Initiative grant of £208,867 from central government to provide immediate support for rough sleepers in Aylesbury Vale. This adds to the £223,789 grant received last year from the programme, which has enabled AVDC to achieve a 60% reduction in rough sleepers since November 2017 and to house 30 clients since the start of the project.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government announced the new grant on 13 March 2019, with the funding covering the period 2019-20. The grant will boost the support available to people living on the streets of Aylesbury Vale and help them into accommodation. It will also increase the amount of assistance that can be offered to those at risk and sleeping rough during the colder months in spring, autumn and winter.
AVDC will continue to work closely with homelessness support agencies and charities in the Vale to develop innovative support solutions and provide sustainable accommodation for those sleeping rough. This includes providing emergency accommodation and assessment as well as support for people with mental health and substance misuse issues to help them sustain tenancies in the longer term.
Cllr Mark Winn, Cabinet Member for Communities, commented:
“I really welcome this second year of funding from the government which provides us with the opportunity to continue the inspiring work that is going on already with our partners. It will allow us to build on the successes to date in which 27 rough sleepers have been found accommodation in the first 12 months of the scheme.
“As a result, we will be able to continue to deliver targeted help, support and accommodation, so we can keep helping those still on the streets, who have very complex needs, to realise that they have options which will put them back onto a pathway to permanent accommodation.
