Start date announced for leisure centre’s makeover

5 Feb 2015

The £2.6 million makeover of Buckingham’s Swan Pool and Leisure Centre will start this month.

Construction contractor Balfour Beatty has been appointed to carry out the works, which will include remodelling and enlarging the changing village and creating a separate dry side changing area. There are also plans to increase the size of the gymnasium, modernise the reception and pool spectating area, introduce a multi-use activity area and install a new climbing facility.

The improvement works start on Monday 16 February and completion is due early next year. Work will be phased to keep as many facilities open for use throughout the construction.

The project is being funded by Aylesbury Vale District Council, Sport England, New Homes Bonus money and section 106 contributions.

The Swan Pool and Leisure Centre was opened in 1996 and – after 18 years – is now showing its age. The improvements will provide a fresher, more pleasant environment for local residents of all ages to enjoy and be active in.

Councillor Howard Mordue, Cabinet Member for Leisure at AVDC, said: “This is a substantial investment to improve the leisure centre for the benefit of the community. We aim to keep disruption to a minimum while the work is carried out and I’m confident that users of the centre will be extremely pleased with the end results. These planned improvements show the council’s continued commitment to providing residents with a high standard of leisure facilities across the district.”

Kris Wadley, Construction Manager, Balfour Beatty, said: “We are delighted to be working with Aylesbury Vale District Council to deliver what will be dramatic improvements to the existing Leisure Centre and are savouring the challenge of completing the work whilst maintaining an operational facility.”

Sports and Leisure Management (SLM) Ltd, operating under its brand name, Everyone Active, assumed responsibility for the operation of the Swan Pool and Leisure Centre on behalf of AVDC in 2013. The leisure operator will work alongside the council to deliver the improvement project.

Christine Coppack, Contract Manager for Everyone Active, said: “This exciting project will see the Swan Pool and Leisure Centre significantly improved to offer an excellent standard of facilities, which the whole community can enjoy. The centre will be operating as normal during the works and we encourage all our customers to keep visiting to keep an eye on this amazing transformation!”

Charles Johnston, Sport England Property Director, said: “We’re pleased to be working with the district council to improve the sports facilities in the local community. We know people have a better experience of sport when there are good facilities to use. Our investment of £500,000 of National Lottery funding into Swan Pool and Leisure Centre will have a big impact on sport in Buckingham.”
