Vale Lottery celebrates turning one in style!

30 Nov 2016

The Vale Lottery turned one on Monday and to celebrate Aylesbury Vale District Council welcomed actress Michelle Collins and Strictly’s Brendan Cole to The Gateway, as they both showed their support for the innovative fundraising scheme.

Local good causes who are already signed up to the scheme attended alongside the celebrity guests, in recognition of the funding that the lottery has provided in its first year. As they shared what the Vale Lottery meant to their individual causes, praise was given to the fundraising scheme for the additional support it provides and the potential the scheme has to grow in the future.

In its first year, the Vale Lottery has generated over £70,000 for the causes, exceeding all original targets when launched. Under the scheme, 60p in every pound goes directly to a good cause and the remaining costs go towards the running costs and prize fund - AVDC do not take a penny. The player can then chose to either support a favourite local cause or alternatively support the general good cause fund – all while playing to win the £25,000 jackpot prize.

EastEnders and Coronation Street actress, Michelle Collins, who is starring in Aladdin at Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre, said: “I think the Vale Lottery is a fantastic idea! It’s a bit of a revelation really, which I think other councils and communities should follow. With all the funding cuts, Councils need to think outside the box to find other ways to raise this money because the need is certainly still there. I think it’s very entrepreneurial, it’s fantastic!”

Local Vale resident and BBC Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole was also there. He said: “It’s a great scheme! As a local resident it’s lovely to know how much the Vale Lottery benefits good causes and different people within the local community. I have spoken to a number of the local causes today and know just how much the Vale Lottery benefits them all. I think it’s definitely something we can all be very proud of.”

Cllr Janet Blake, Cabinet Member for Business Transformation added: “It’s fantastic news that we are celebrating exceeding our expectations within the Vale Lottery’s first year of running. This scheme provides vital support for local good causes and we look forward to growing even further over the forthcoming year.”
